The First Work · 第一作

Everything else begins to pass the day you buy it. This did not.

A bath tote of hinoki, joined by hand. A tool for the water, made of the same wood as the bath.

The Jindai Tote: hinoki, dovetailed, with a wooden handle bar
01 · Into the water

In the bath, it gets wet too.

In Japan, bathing is not only washing. At the end of the day it is a small rite, a crossing from noise into quiet. The Jindai Tote goes with you to the water, and in the bath it gets wet, all of it. A rite deserves a tool made for it.

02 · The wood that welcomes steam

Hinoki, the wood the bath itself is made of.

The tub, the pail, the bench: hinoki has long lived in steam. Leather dislikes steam. It stains, stiffens, and can grow mould. So the Jindai Tote remakes the memory of the old bath basket, by hand, in hinoki.

Hinoki grain
Unfinished. The scent is the finish.
03 · Its presence

At home on a cypress bench, or on tatami.

You would rather not set a damp bag on the floor. The Jindai Tote stands on its own, holds its shape with its mouth open, and settles in wherever it is placed. The quiet presence of a tool that has always lived beside the water.

04 · By hand

Dovetailed at every corner. No fittings, no stitches.

A carpenter chooses each board, reads the grain, and joins the piece by hand. Because the material is natural, the grain and colour differ from piece to piece. No two are the same.

Material & Age · 素材と経年

Hinoki, the wood of baths and shrines.

The Jindai Tote is designed to age. The more it is used, the more quietly its scent settles. So that after the water, it is more beautiful still. We make things that last, and make few of them. Not throwing a thing away is the greatest respect we can pay the forest.

Long the wood of the bath, and of the shrine.
